My name is Evan Brumbaugh, I am in the eleventh grade, and this is my blog. I was assigned a project in English III called Genius Hour. My Genius Hour Project is a composition of music which is entitled Timeless Journey. This is an orchestra like piece that contains various instrumental voices such as the flutes, clarinets, and trumpets in the Soprano section; the alto saxophone, french horns, and lower reed in the alto voices; the Baritones, Tenor Saxophones, and Trombones in the Tenor section; and finally instruments such as Baritone Saxophones, Tubas, and String bass in the bass section. Along with those instruments, the music will be accompanied by the percussion section consisting of bells, chimes, snare, and other percussion instruments. Together with each individual section and part, it will create a theme of suspense, slow and fast movements, along with a bundle of excitement and variation.
The purpose of this project is to improve my Music Theory skills and detection. Music Theory is the study, and creation of chords to fit any set of note and pitches within each staff. Each chord is made up of three notes, the first, third, and fifth of a chromatic pattern. The main scale patterns are in the order of bead and gcf; Bb, Eb, Ab, Db; and G, C, and F scales. With these scales a composer can orchestrate a series of chord to have a melody, counter- melody, harmony, and bass. These are ways to shape a piece, so it may allow the listener to feel emotion within the piece.
My goal with this project is to have the four page, 25 instrumental part, piece to be completed by the twelve week deadline, rehearsed, and, performed by the Davie High School Symphonic or Wind Ensemble within the next two concerts, that being of by the spring or the upcoming fall concert. This goal has been a vision of mine since freshman year, I just didn’t understand how to start it. I hope to improve my music comprehension skill, along with a better understanding of how a piece is created. This journey that I take will hopefully give me a bit more emotion when reading, composing, or playing a piece during and after the finishing of the project. The materials i will be using are Musescore and Weebly, along with many other websites, books or other methods of learning and understanding the music.
